Content = Credibility. Do This Instead of That.

Have you ever tried reading an article and a few sentences in you realize that you have no idea what you read? So you go back and try again, only to find it happen again? Maybe you have too much on your mind, or you can’t focus at the moment.

More likely, the article you are reading is confusing. Your brain is having a hard time understanding it, so it goes somewhere else.

Don't make this mistake in your own writing. Think clean. Proofread. Make your message crystal clear across all your marketing channels: websites, blogs, emails, and social media.

The last thing you want to do is drive your readers away through sloppy writing.

Your writing is your first impression

Grammar errors, poor sentence structure, and spelling mistakes send a powerful message to your audience. A company that doesn't care enough to proofread, does not instill confidence. Details matter. Your writing is your front line. It’s your voice and your story. Make sure it’s effective in communicating your message.

Your writing establishes you as an expert against your competition

The purpose of all your business writing is to establish you as a leader and an expert in your field. Why should one person choose you over your competitor? Because you know your stuff. You’re the best. Write in a way that is clean and concise - show that you are the best choice.

Your writing needs to, well, read well.

If you are in charge of marketing, you know the importance of your company's message. You might have the best product or the best service out there. You know it, your boss knows it, and your job is to let everyone else know it. Effective communication is paramount to gaining a responsive audience. Errors in writing throw people off and your message won’t be as powerful.

Some Quick Tips for Better Writing

Write with your reader in mind

Remember - you are writing for your readers, not for yourself. Take out all the fluff but explain yourself. Get to the point and make sure your story flows. Be consistent. Remove redundancy. William Zinsser said it best in his timeless book On Writing Well:


Avoid cliches at all cost

“The Best in its Class” and “Superb Customer Service” are dead. People are savvy. They’ve heard it all before. Those tired phrases are boring! Kick it up a notch - be unique!

Print and read aloud

Grammarly, spell check, Hemmingway - they miss things sometimes. These programs are great as a first review. My advice - print out what you wrote and read it out loud. It's amazing what your editing programs can miss.

Nobody is perfect. In fact, according to The Law of Prescriptivist Retaliation, any article or statement about correct grammar, punctuation, or spelling is bound to contain at least one error.
