Four Easy Blog Posts You Can Write Today

If you’re busy running a small or medium-sized business, you are most likely the head of every department: customer service, bookkeeping, logistics, quality control, product or service development, and marketing. 

And you know, as part of your marketing strategy, you should be blogging to generate more traffic and more leads to your website. If you want to stand out, or at least align with your competitors, you need to blog frequently with great content. 

Easier said than done. I’m going to guess that updating your website with great blog content is on your daily to-do list, but rarely gets checked off. I know this because I get stuck in the same rut - I’m too busy providing my clients with a great experience to keep up with my own blog. 

And then, when you finally carve out some time to create a post, it looks like this: an empty white page with a blinking cursor. I know, because I’ve been there too. Maybe you actually, finally get some words on the page and then three sentences in you say, “this is crap, eff it!” Yep, been there as well. 

One solution is to write about what you know. Make it easy on yourself and create posts around your expertise, but make them valuable to your readers. Another really great and sneaky way to find content for your blog? 

These easy blog post ideas will get words on your paper fast. You can even write more than one post for each idea, creating a ton of content to build up your blog. 

HOW-TO BLOG POSTS
How-to posts are a home run for your blog because there is nobody that knows more about what you do than you do. Whatever your business is, whether it’s landscaping, home design, tree removal, real estate, or pet care, creating a how-to article that will be of value to your audience or the audience that you’re trying to reach is a piece of cake, and more importantly it positions you as an expert in your field. 

Yes, there may already be hundreds of blog posts on how to do “that thing.” It’s ok to write about something that’s already been covered. You’ll be hard-pressed to write about ANY topic that is truly original. 

To get around that hurdle and write an article that stands out from others, put a personal spin on it. Inject personality into your story by talking about a project gone wrong or a lesson learned. Keep it light and informative. Strive to connect with your readers on a personal level. They’ll feel like they are getting to know you, can trust you, and ultimately they’ll want to work with you. 

The article you are reading now is an example of a how-to blog post. I specialize in writing blog articles for my clients. I do the research, write, edit, and create blurbs for their social media to help promote the content I send them. The articles I create for my own website are about content marketing (a fancy name for any writing that goes out in marketing efforts). This is clearly a post about “how-to pick topics for your business blog.” 

CHECKLISTS
This is another easy one you can hammer out in less than an hour. It’s similar to the how-to article but more specific in that you’re giving your readers something tangible; a list they can print and use. 

What kind of checklist? The kind that relates to what you offer your customers. If you’re a snow removal company, create a “winter-ready” checklist. Tailors create an “emergency sewing kit” checklist. Breweries create a “football tailgate party” checklist. 

Make sure to include an introduction and a little story that makes the article personal. Maybe you talk about that one time you didn’t have an essential item on your checklist and how the situation went completely awry. Or the opposite - maybe you had everything you needed on that list that led to success. 

Remember, you’re creating value for your readers. What would they print, take with them, and use? Even better, what will they share with others? Either online, in social media, or in print? This is how you spread the word and create trust in your brand. 

CASE STUDIES
Another slam-dunk. Easy to create and people love reading them. Think of a win (or a struggle) that one of your clients had and blow it up. 

Look through your list of clients and determine which one(s) were successful using your service or product. Email or call them and ask some questions about their success. Then craft a story around it. 

For example, I have clients who receive four blog posts from me every month. Shortly following a blog posts I sent to one of them, I received an email with a sweet note that told me how much the blog posts have been boosting their SEO. They are ranked higher on Google search results than ever before for their keywords and their blogs are getting tons of traffic from their target audience. 

Now, if I were going to write a case study about her, I would get super specific and find out which posts were working great for their website, how much their traffic has increased, and how my blog content has taken enormous stress off her in terms of running a successful business. 

It’s kind of like tooting your own horn, but without being cocky. 

LOCAL EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES 
So easy you barely have to do anything. Talking about local events will generate local traffic and visitors to your website. Someone searching for “winter family activities in ‘your town’” could result in that person stumbling on your website and into your store, or recommending you to someone else, or buying your service. 

Where to find the events in your town? Check Facebook first. You’ll find a smorgasbord of events ranging from late-night DJ parties to macrame classes. Think of who your target audience is. If it’s moms, create an event list of things to do with your kids. If it’s twenty-somethings, post a list about all the music happening over the weekend. 

The local chamber of commerce web page is also a perfect resource for finding events. You’ll come across big community happenings including volunteering opportunities, networking mixers, wine and food festivals, and more. Some ideas to get you started: best happy hours in your town, volunteering for kids, festival round-up, classes that are great for a date night. 

You can create a post a week just outlining what’s happening in your neck of the woods. 

Not so daunting, right? These are all topics you can write about. Just make sure to go back and reread your article before you post it, checking for spelling, sentence structure, grammar, and redundancy. Better yet, have someone else read it. Copy editing your own writing is not the most ideal way, but hey, sometimes you just have to do what it takes to get your content posted and into the world.
